<p>The unit was established as a Reserve unit as the 436th Troop Carrier Wing at Godman AFB, KY in June 1949 with C-45s and C-47s. The 436th moved to Standiford MAP, KY in October 1950 and was mobilized in April 1951 and inactivated immediately. The wing reformed in May 1955 with the C-45 and C-46 at NAS New York, NY until inactivated again in May 1958. The 436th MAW was activated in January 1966 to replace the 1607th Air Transport Wing at Dover AFB, when MATS changed to MAC. The C-124C and C-133A were operated until the C-141A StarLifter commenced delivery in 1966, followed by the C-5A Galaxy in 1971. By mid-1973 the wing was equipped solely with the C-5, as its C-141s had been transferred elsewhere. The wing has won or been joint winner of the Mackay Trophy for 'the most meritorious flight of the year' no fewer than three times, in 1977 (along with 512th MAW (Associate)), 1978 and 1988. The unit changed to 436th Airlift Wing in September 1991.
